American Samoa Indigenous Samoan Partnership to Initiate REsearch Excellence (INSPIRE) in Colorectal Cancer Health Literacy

Project Abstract An estimated 5.8 million Americans, age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) equating to 1 in every 10. Approximately 42% of the population are comprised of minority groups such as the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders. According to the 2010 Census, this group was amongst the fastest growing in the country. However, there is a paucity of related ADRD studies for this group. The first known study to determine possible ADRD prevalence in the indigenous population of American Samoa used respondent driven sampling to recruit 540 adults age 60 and above. The Saint Louis University Mental Status examination tool was used to determine possible dementia or mild neurocognitive disorder in both the English (n=175) and Samoan (n=365) languages. Of the study group, 82.3% of the Samoan and 84.0% of the English participants scored in either the MNCD or dementia ranges. Cross cultural research designs have been known to improve community reception and effectiveness of approximating health outcomes in NHOPI populations. Culturally and linguistically adapted tools to capture ADRD data are limited for these populations. The proposed INdigenous Samoan Partnership to Initiate Research Excellence (INSPIRE) supplement aims to: assess for possible ADRD in American Samoa with an emphasis on the Samoan population age 50 and above (n=208) using the Kimberely Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA) tool. Efforts will be led by the American Samoa Community Cancer Coalition and with dedicated technical assistance from a clinical psychologist and medical doctor to ensure data collection validity. The effort should increase the number of data available for ADRD research and the number of culturally and appropriate tools to assess ADRD in the Samoan population.
