Project Summary
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and
Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) has been a NCI designated CCC since 1976. The
OSUCCC mission remains to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality through continued basic, translational,
population and clinical research.
Eliminating disparities across the continuum of cancer care, with the inclusion of a diverse population in
research, is vital to the development of new modalities to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. The OSUCCC is
committed to providing the best care across the cancer continuum to all individuals who seek care at our facilities,
which includes participation in research. One way to ensure that the population within the OSUCC-James
catchment area receives best possible care is through engaging the various communities and providing cancer
awareness, especially an understanding of the importance of trial participation.
We will focus the proposed supplement on implementing a Clinical Trials Initiative within our urban
underserved African American, low income Caucasian, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and refugee (Somali and Nepali)
communities, and an HPV Vaccination Initiative in all of these populations, as well as in our Appalachian and
rural counties.
To accomplish the goals of this NON supplement and build upon previous outreach efforts aimed at
eliminating health disparities, OSUCCC will utilize two community health educators (1.2 total FTE) to work in
partnership with researchers and key NCI-sponsored academic, and community, and regional partners to
enhance NCI’s ability to effectively reach underserved and minority communities through achieving the following
specific aims:
Aim 1: Increase awareness and knowledge about clinical trials and biospecimen research and facilitate
participation in clinical trials among racially/ethnically diverse communities in urban Columbus communities
through implementation of Clinical Trial (CT) & Biospecimen Studies Participation Initiative; and
Aim 2: Increase awareness and knowledge of the HPV types that can lead to cancer and uptake of the HPV
vaccine in the various underserved populations in our catchment area through implementation of the Human
Papillomavirus (HPV) Outreach and Vaccination initiative.
