Abstract-Computational Systems Core (CSC)
As described in the Administration and Coordination Core (ACC) Research Strategy, the vision of this
proposed AIMINGS Center is to implement computational and data science approaches and tools to advance
nutrition for precision health. To accomplish this vision the Data Systems Core (DSC), the four projects, the
pilot projects, the Nutrition for Precision Health (NPH) Consortium, and the larger precision nutrition research
community could benefit from an integrated and readily available set of dedicated computational resources and
expertise. Having separate such resources for each project and core could lead to unnecessary redundancy
and more importantly missed synergies and opportunities. Each project, while able to function as a stand-alone
project, is designed to facilitate and further each other. Thus, a central set of computational resources and
expertise would facilitate this integration and work together. Moreover, it will be easier for a single set of
resources and expertise to adapt to not only evolution of the projects but also evolution of what may be needed
for the NPH consortium and the emergence of new technology, which continues to evolve. Additionally, such a
situation will make it easier to shift resources and personnel from one project to another, providing cross-
training opportunities. Thus, the AIMINGS Center will have a Computational Systems Core (CSC) that
consists of both computational programming and modeling personnel that will serve all AIMINGS
Center projects as well as the NPH Consortium and beyond. The West Point internal computing platforms
are a shared resource in the CSC that allows for immediate model simulation and data processing across
AIMINGS. Our CSC team has extensive experience in computational resources, security of controlled data,
hardware and app development, computational model development in multiple programming languages and
experience leading many different computational modeling and tool development projects. These resources
(e.g., data storage, processing power, and compute time) will be available to all AIMINGS Center Cores and
Projects, including the Pilot Projects. Aim 1 will provide shared computational and data resources to the
AIMINGS Center Cores and Projects and NPH Consortium. Aim 2 will provide mathematical and
computational modeling expertise and resources to support the activities of the AIMINGS Projects and the
NPH Consortium. Aim 3 will provide expertise and resources in computational tool development and
deployment to support the activities of the AIMINGS Projects and the NPH Consortium. The AIMINGS
Computational Systems Core will bring multiple innovations, such as: (1) Integrating and implementing
Department of Defense (DoD) computing power to address nutrition for precision health, (2) Bringing a new
level of data security to nutrition for precision health, (3) Resources and expertise to create new collaborative
platforms, and (4) Creating a new generation of hybrid, transdisciplinary researchers who have enough
understanding both the computational and nutrition/health aspects of the work.
