英文摘要
Embarking on a transformative journey, our groundbreaking project is set to revolutionise energy efficiency and comfort for over 2 million pre-1919 terrace houses in England (Bre Trust, 2020; EHS, 2010). The prevalence of combi boilers underscores the need to shift towards net-zero solutions, aligning with the government's ambitious target of 600,000 annual heat pump installations by 2028 (Gov.uk, September 2023). A particular challenge for small Victorian terraced houses, necessitating innovative solutions.Upon completion, our project aims to deliver a comprehensive blueprint for cost-effective and timely improvements to energy efficiency in pre-1919 terrace houses. Tailored for the private rented sector, our blueprint is designed to be scalable and applicable to the owner-occupier sector through scale-up initiatives. This approach incorporates valuable tenant opinions, ensuring broad acceptance of the implemented technologies. In the subsequent project stage, extending beyond this application's scope, we plan to retrofit a property according to this blueprint, providing tangible proof of concept and an ongoing working model. Our journey begins with an exhaustive market scan, creating a library of options such as infrared heating, modern storage heaters, solar technology, and battery storage. This ensures a diverse range of solutions catering to the unique needs of pre-1919 terrace houses.A baseline test in our test home, currently utilising gas heating, will provide insights into energy consumption and efficiency. This data will be compared with that from our completed show home, enabling us to evaluate the potential for transitioning to alternative technologies while ensuring optimal heating and cost-effectiveness.Engaging with tenants through market research is pivotal to understanding sentiments regarding new technologies and preferences for home improvements. This human-centric approach ensures that upgrades align with residents' desires for comfort, energy savings, and overall satisfaction.Utilising multiple databases, including property and weather data, our project employs comprehensive analysis. Building data and behavioural insights from surveys and interviews guide a holistic, data-driven approach tailored to the unique characteristics and geographical considerations of the housing archetype.More than a technological overhaul, this transformative project is a community-driven endeavour. By combining market-savvy strategies, baseline testing, tenant insights, and data-driven decision-making, our initiative aims to redefine living standards in historic homes. The goal is not just to meet government targets but to create sustainable, comfortable, and future-ready residences, showcasing responsible urban living.Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting journey towards a greener, smarter, and more sustainable future for our existing historic housing stock.
