"Lifestyle factors such as smoking, hygiene, diet, and lack of physical activity are detrimental to health and well-being, yet all involve behaviours that are controllable. These lifestyle factors are major risk factors of the 'big four' non-communicable diseases (NCDs): heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory disease. Europe has the highest rate of NCDs in the world accounting for 82% of early death. However, at least 80% of all heart disease and type-2 diabetes, and at least one third of cancer cases are avoidable. The key to countering early death is dealing with the key behavioural risk factors. Unfortunately, experts are often only available in the traditional hospital setting where waiting lists can be up to 12 months. Private healthcare, is expensive and there is no guarantee of regular support.Outside of hospital settings the effectiveness of health care treatments is highly dependent on patient adherence, performing self-examinations, or avoiding specific activities or habits. Poor adherence to prescribed changes or recommended behaviours over time is a significant problem. Human behaviour remains the largest source of variance in health-related treatment success.
