Plant life extension is currently a common goal for most engineering sectors worldwide due tolimited resources, time and money, and more recently social and environmental barriers.Structural integrity is a key aspect of life extension programmes and the ability to measure theinternal stress state of aged components will make a significant and profound difference toassessing their potential for life extension. However for some plants, the extreme/aggressiveand restricted access environments that would be experienced by the equipment or personnelwhen trying to carry out the measurements currently prohibits such important work, e.g. forirradiated nuclear reactor components.VEQTER is a world leading company providing internal stress measurement services to allengineering sectors worldwide. VEQTER’s project will start to address this issue by creatingand then testing a proof of concept, remotely operated, robotic machine to measure thethrough-thickness internal stresses within metallic components in hazardous or limited accessenvironments. No other capability like this currently exists and so this project will push theboundaries of current leading-edge science.
