DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY KIT FOR TOBACCO PREVENTION

DESCRIPTION: This project will develop a culturally appropriate Community Kit for Tobacco Prevention and Control for use in the Appalachian region, where 21 million people live. This culturally unique region has a high incidence of tobacco use and tobacco-related health problems but lacks culturally congruent materials for tobacco prevention and control. Indeed, little research exists on what constitutes culturally sensitive health education for Appalachians. Thus, this project will be original and ground breaking in its efforts to develop culturally appropriate materials to reduce Appalachian tobacco use. Specific objectives include to: review the literature and conduct key informant interviews concerning the prevention and control of Appalachian tobacco use; develop criteria to measure the cultural suitability of tobacco prevention and control materials now used in Appalachia; acquire, catalog and assess existing tobacco prevention and control materials used in Appalachia; conduct focus groups to determine the best materials; and recommend a core package of extant materials and identify gaps in them. Phase I will culminate in a monograph on findings and catalog of relevant materials located. In Phase II, the firm will develop products to fill identified gaps; in Phase III, it will market the comprehensive, culturally appropriate Community Kit throughout Appalachia.
