Europe is experiencing a tourism crisis. Fixated on capitalist ideals of continued sector growth, informed through elite interests and unequal power relations, tourism development is rendering unprecedented social and environmental pressures on tourism dominant landscapes and communities. And yet, paradoxically, tourism is an established tool for the 'inclusive' development of regions; with limited interrogation from policy realms concerning the legacies of tourism development beyond its economic significance. Tourism, as it is, cannot continue.Tourism's crisis, in part, stems from a conceptual crisis within tourism research itself, whereby there are a notable lack of conceptual tools that enable critical interrogation of tourism's injustices as both a lived experience and part of a broader political economy. In consequence, previous attempts to deconstruct the injustices of tourism have merely constructed alternative types of tourism, that do not necessarily conform to the dominant ideals of continued sector growth but ultimately fail to deconstruct tourism development as a capitalist force driven by struggles over capital, labour, and resources.JUST-TOUR aims to rectify this conceptual crisis, and thus remedy tourism's crisis, by developing and launching a spatial justice framework for tourism research. Enacted through an interdisciplinary framework, and tested through case studies, JUST-TOUR is capable of critically interrogating the injustices of tourism development and determining just solutions to the problem of resident and community rights. This framework overcomes the limitations of existing approaches by uniting political economy and feminist geography to understand both the process and form of injustice as they unfold within specific place-based contexts, rendering a new conceptual framework for tourism research.
