Digital and online violence is a growing phenomenon, which if left unchecked, can cause serious harm to individuals and groups. Smartphones, tablets, computers, wearable technologies and smart home systems have all become part of daily life. With them though, are challenges not anticipated when technology made things 'possible.' As our dependency on technology has grown - especially notable during the Covid-19 pandemic - and life has become digitally integrated, the potential for abuse, violence, and harm have grown exponentially. From online abuses on social media, to technologically facilitated violence, the risks of leaving digital and online violence unchecked are too great. This project seeks to fill that gap and ensure that not only are these forms of violence called out, but societal and regulatory responses are forthcoming in South Korea and the UK. Systematic failures of state(s), and international organisations to recognise and respond to, and address and tackle digital and online forms of violence against women effectively are a failure to protect women's rights and safety. Insufficient responses have significant ramifications for women's rights and for ensuring their safety, dignity, and equality at all times. This is a constant, and repeated failure, irrespective of the geographical location of the women affected, or the digital means by which violence is perpetrated. Despite calls from politicians, civil society organisations (and the general public, little has been done to:i) examine and capture the extent and typology of digital and online violence perpetrated through technological means,ii) explore the comparative elements of this phenomenon across continents, cultures, and disciplines, oriii) develop meaningful proposals to tackle digital violence. This project will bring together an international, and interdisciplinary group of individuals engaged in contemporary research to address digital and online forms of violence, especially online violence against women. The project seeks to build a collective network to establish priority areas of further research that can lead to creation of tangible mechanisms to address the challenges posed by digital and online violence in both South Korea and the UK. The challenges posed by digital and online forms of violence cover a number of disciplines, sectors, and jurisdictions, and cannot be solved in isolation. This project seeks to bring together researchers engaged in internet safety, technology, law, politics, media regulation, sport, journalism, politics, and education so as to share knowledge and challenge disciplinary limitations of responding to the pernicious phenomenon of digital violence.
