I am requesting funding for a one-year, secondary analysis of two case- control studies in determining the role of childhood and adolescent experiences, the family and surrounding environment, antisocial behavior in adolescence, substance use, mental health and housing status as risk factors for adult criminal behavior. One case-control study provides data for 200 newly homeless and 200 never homeless indigent adult men and women in New York City with no history of mental illness. The other case-control study provides data for 200 newly or chronically homeless and 200 never homeless indigent adult men and women in New York City with a current or lifetime history of severe mental illness. By comparing the two studies, it will be possible to clarify the roles of the family, social and educational domains which may predispose certain individuals to commit crimes. In addition, the role of service intervention will be investigated in its relationship to antisocial behavior and substance use and later antisocial outcomes.
