Tracing large-scale structure growth with SCUBA-2

SCUBA played a key role in establishing that powerful high-z radio galaxies (HzRGs) are amongst the most massive galaxies in the early Universe, pin-pointing rich proto-cluster environments. Theory predicts that the formation and evolution of galaxies occurs at an accelerated rate in such high-density regions compared to regions of lower density. Our project is part of a larger effort to map the large-scale environments of samples of HzRGs at z~1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 with SCUBA-2 to in order to: 1) identify submillimetre-selected proto-cluster members (SMGs) via photometric redshifts, 2) measure the average overdensity of SMGs around HzRGs at these two epochs, 3) and contrast our findings with numerical simulations of structure growth.
