A randomised controlled trial of Focal Electrically Administered Seizure Therapy (FEAST) in patients with severe depression

Severe depression is devastating for those affected and is often accompanied by a significant risk of suicide. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective acute treatment for severe depression. Though highly effective, the use of ECT is limited by cognitive, particularly memory, side effects. This randomised controlled trial will assess FEAST, a new form of ECT, vs conventional ECT. We expect FEAST will have the high efficacy of ECT, but much less effects on memory and thinking.
