This project aims to develop superconducting antennas and planar filtering structures for optical coupling to kinetic inductance detectors for use in future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. Development in this area will allow a single pixel to detect and separate light from several different frequencies in two polarisations, drastically simplifying and reducing the volume of focal planes allowing cheaper and more compact instruments to be realised without a compromise on performance. The project comprises research into superconductor electrodynamics at RF frequencies, fabrication processes and detector design and fabrication. Work is carried out in collaboration with our partners at Cambridge University.
