A new kind of score: rethinking the relationship between composer, performer and technology

This practice-based research will explore new avenues for indeterminate composition made possible by tablet based score readers. I will be asking whether new innovations enable the development of a more fluid and dynamic relationship between composer, performer and technology. I will be producing a portfolio of works as well as initiating a dialogue with performers and documenting their feedback.Key research questions include: What criteria should be used to assess the success of performances? What approaches to performer preparation are most fruitful? How can the technology be made accessible to performers? This research will move towards a more nuanced integration of structure and content while usefully and provocatively challenging received ideas about the ontology of scores within the context of contemporary networked technology and devices.
