Car Designers as Urban Planners. Re-Shaping the City through Autonomous Driving

My project explores how the autonomous car re-shapes our cities. Predicted to be widely available in the near future, the self-driving car injects powerful technologies - often military in origin - into the circuits of urban everyday life. From satellite navigation to automated surveillance and augmented reality systems, autonomous driving puts radically new demands on the form and function of analogue and digital urban space. To understand these shifts, my project combines perspectives from Marxist urban geography and science and technology studies with in-depth ethnographic research. Approaching the development of self-driving cars not as a pre-political "given", but as a highly contested field that brings together and interweaves a whole range of urban systems, services, spaces and technologies, my project foregrounds car design as a powerful, yet often neglected spatial practice for re-shaping the urban fabric and our accelerating experiences within it.
