Sunscreens and related compounds are known to slow down the process of skin ageing caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in sunlight. The sunscreens and related compounds also contain actives which contribute the skin protection and anti-ageing of the products. The objectives are to determine the biochemical effects of aspects of the electromagnetic spectrum on biomarkers of skin function and its commercial application towards the modulation and intervention of such effectsThis science together with the direct links with Croda and its benefit to the UK market and beyond fits very well with the BBSRC vision to lead world-class 21st century bioscience, promoting innovation in the bioeconomy and realising benefits for society within and beyond the UK. The project clearly complies with the BBSRC vision statement of "Staying healthier for longer as lifespans increase and society ages"; the BBSRC strategic research priority of "bioscience for health" and the BBSRC enabling theme of "partnerships".
