Many modern manufacturing methods are dependent upon rapid assessment diagnostics to provide accurate products using economic and energy efficient processes. The research questions whether a new, novel characterisation technique (focal construct technology) can be integrated into a number of contemporary manufacturing processes and thus affect significant cost and energy saving for those processes. The research project aims to investigate the application of novel x-ray characterisation techniques for rapid assessment diagnostics in a number of contemporary manufacturing processes. This project has the potential for high impact publications and the possibility of a step change in process control within several industries.The project will seek to solve the fundamental principles underpinning the science and engineering of novel techniques to achieve this, the main research elements to be undertaken will include both theoretical modelling (ray-tracing and Monte-Carlo), engineering and experimental testing (setting up a new camera/detector for assessments. The work will be undertaken with manufacturing and pharmaceutical industrial partners.
