Spanish art in Italian private and public collections. A history of taste from the Risorgimentoto the Roman exhibition of Spannish art in 1930

My proposal is the first extensive study of the story of Spanish art reception in Italy between Risorgimento and 1930 (the year of the Roman exhbition of Alessandro Contini Bonacossi's allegedly Spanish artworks, co-curated by two major critics of Italian and Spanish art, Roberto Longhi and Augustus Mayer.) By adopting a comparative approach regarding the more familiar British and French contexts, my proposal investigates how Spanish art was intrepreted through the lenses of Italian art criticism and curatorial choices; analysing what specificities of Italian dealership were when Spanish art was involved.
