My thesis will consider the humanist tradition of serious play (serio ludere) in sixteenth century England. Addressing a wide range of Latin and vernacular writers, this study will attempt to situate this mode (epitomised by Erasmus's Praise of Folly (1611)) in its wider rhetorical context while also addressing its varying fortunes throughout the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth.
