This project will address a clear gap in the historiography of the returning veteran. The most prominent scholars working on the figure of the veteran in literature have focussed their attention on either the ancient or the post-medieval world, as a result, the figure of the medieval veteran is little explored. Though Kate Mcloughlin's Authoring War: The Literary Representation of War from the Iliad to Iraq (2011) purported to offer a longitudinal study of war that encompassed the middle ages, her stated focus was towards 'the war representation ...of twentieth century Britain and America.' Existing consideration of medieval experiences of war and depictions of veterans have been thematic in nature, such as War and Literature (2014) and Emotions and War (2015) which have looked primarily at the way in which writers conveyed the emotional impact and experience of conflict, or they have only looked at the middle ages in brief as a setting for the discussion to come (Harari 2004). As a result, there is little understanding of how the figure of the veteran was perceived or portrayed in medieval Britain, what that tells us about their experience of war, and what impact warfare had on them either financially, physically, socially, or psychologically.
虽然凯特·麦克劳林(Kate Mcloughlin)的《写作战争:从伊利亚特到伊拉克战争的文学表现》(Authoring War:The Literary Representation of War from the Iliad to Iraq)(2011)旨在提供一个涵盖中世纪的战争纵向研究,但她所说的重点是“战争表现”。
