Understanding the extent, causes, consequences and future of population decline in Europe

This project seeks to enhance our understanding of the causes, underpinning factors and potential consequences of future population decline across 31 European countries. Particularly, this project aims to:- Build a comprehensive database of the proximate determinants of population change (fertility, mortality and migration) and a wide range of socio-economic factors (e.g. population composition, female labour force participation and unemployment rate) at the national and sub-national levels;- Establish the extent, prevalence and timing of population decline in 31 countries in Europe;- Identify the dominant cause of population decline in European countries, and determine sub-national variations in the extent and causes of population decline;- Generate national and sub-national population projections for the most likely scenarios of population change.
