The last decade has seen an increasing number of faith-based organisations (FBOs) formally register with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ESCOSOC) (Haynes 2017; Tomalin 2018). This has coincided with evermore pressing global concern to address climate change and its consequences (UNFCC 2018; COP24 2018). The causes and impact of climate change have received much scholarly and public attention, yet academic research on international FBOs engaged with the UN has focussed on their role in socio-economic development and humanitarianism (Haynes 2017; Carrette 2017), whilst their contributions to climate change action remain under-researched (Ellingson 2012; Berry 2016). The UN itself recognises the potential here, with the publication of the UN Environment Strategy on Engaging with FBOs (UNEP 2018), in the aftermath of the new UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. This project addresses these gaps by researching how and what types of FBOs are engaging with climate change action at the UN level and the extent to which they adopt distinctive styles of 'faith-based' activism and campaigning within the UN system. It will be important to address Carrette's (2017:7) suggestion that FBOs at the UN, though motivated by religion, may operate through "chameleon politics" whereby religion is used more tactically for strategic cooperation. The ways in which FBOs attempt to bridge the gap between international climate change policy and grassroots faith communities in the Global South will also be addressed. I will examine the assumptions often made in studies on environmentalism, both academic and policy, that that faith traditions are inherently environmentally friendly and that this can be regenerated in the Global South to address climate change (Jenkins 2018). Do these discourses romanticise the relationship between religions and environmentalism, or can they inform strategies to address climate change? Berry, E. 2016. 42(2),pp. 77-85.
