My research will focus on the affective dimension of the twentieth-century workplace; in particular, I aim to explore howthe emphasis on productivity, professionalism and efficiency required emotional labour and emotion management.Through this I hope to develop a deeper understanding of how the modern workplace helped shape twentieth-centurysubjectivities. I plan on using training and recruitment material from business archives to investigate the expectations andpractices of emotion management in both the service sector and manufacturing industries circa 1920-60. Furthermore, Iintend to discuss the emotional repertoires of those in managerial positions, using contemporary prescriptive literature onsalesmanship and business etiquette. My focus on different occupations will allow me to explore how gendered norms ofemployment and emotion impacted affective repertoires. Through my proposed periodisation I aim to capture thechanging nature of the British workforce and workplace, including the growth of automation and specialisation inmanufacturing, as well as the beginnings of the digital age. I also aim to investigate the American influence on British'feeling rules', informed by the historiography on American emotional transformation in the twentieth century. Myresearch will also enter into dialogue with the literature on affective change in Britain, which emphasises the role of theSecond World War and post-war reconstruction in creating new emotional styles.
