The Third Woman: A novel and essay on political alienation and Western intervention in the Middle East

For my proposed research, I will produce an original literary novel based on my experiences as a female journalist in Turkey. The novel will explore the topic of Western intervention Middle East, alongside themes of shame, political alienation and the decline of modern journalism. Through a practice-led approach, I hope to use fiction to represent the questioning of identity and one's notion of self while living in a country effected by the foreign policy of your own.This research will be practice-led, in which my final creative work of a full-length novel will be supported by a 15,000 word evaluative essay and scholarly informed reflective commentary on the writing process, which will scrutinise the practical approach taken to conceive, develop and revise the project. My proposed novel is set in Gaziantep, Turkey during the Syrian Civil War. The creative work will be informed by research into the history of the area, the politics and impact of the Syrian Civil War on local and foreign society, as well as the larger context of Western interventions in the Middle East since the Sykes-Picot Agreement and the decline of journalism in the early 21st century. Written from a female perspective, by a female writer, the novel will be informed by the current innovations in contemporary literature, particularly the rise of auto-fiction, hybrid writing and depictions of alienation in living abroad novels.
