Remembering the Future: the reconstruction of memory, the past and the future in the nineteenth century Spanish short story

My project explores memory in the nineteenth century short story 1850 to 1899. The project offers an innovative perspective of nineteenth century Spain drawing upon theoretical frameworks from the interdisciplinary field of memory studies to analyse how concepts of temporality the future and memoryare expressed in the short story which is even still an understudied form.Leopoldo Alas Clarin 1852 to 1901 short fiction will form a major part of the study. His place as one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century is richly deserved. His memories of the 1868 Revolution Carlist Wars and the transitional phase to modernity as well as his unique spatial perspective of Asturias mean that his writing provides a highly rich and experimental yet hitherto understudied body of works for the exploration of memory. A corpus of twenty works will be selected based on the time period to which they belong being the latter half of the nineteenth century.
