The popularity of synchronous machines over other power generating systems has dramatically increased over the past few years. They are particularly important for applications that require minimum maintenance and provides smooth excitation control. Brushless synchronous machines with a separate exciter is a good candidate in such cases, however, having a separate exciter reduces the compactness of the system whilst introducing thermal difficulties. My work will propose a solution with a two-stage synchronous generator to eliminate such limitations by integrating the exciter machine to the main machine's active or passive components. This will allow me to achieve a more compact machine design with better thermal management, increased power density and reduced axial length.
