英文摘要
Building on background research on the importance of human-animal relationships in the Viking Age, this project aims toexplore the regional differences and manifestations of Norse identity in the eastern Viking world through an analysis ofmortuary traditions and practices, and specifically the evidence for Norse burials with animal remains - or lack thereof - insome key burial grounds of the Viking settlement in Eastern Europe. This will be compared to the evidence of animalofferings in graves in the territories of the western Viking diaspora (e.g. the British Isles and Iceland), and within theScandinavian homeland itself. The presence - or absence - of animal remains will be used to discuss the negotiation ofNorse identities as well as the translation and adaptation of Scandinavian burial customs into new lands and new sociopolitical contexts, as connected to migration patterns, identity formation and culture contact dynamics.
