Episodic Labour Mobilisation During the Levant's 'Dark Ages': the View from Khirbet al-Mudayna al-'Aliya

Bringing together KMA's excavation data with digital reconstructions of the fortifications, data from targeted site surveys, and an in-depth exploration of the current literature will allow us to understand the dynamics behind episodic mobilisation of labour around the Wadi Mujib. It will allow for a more comprehensive and inclusive look at the archaeological realities of state formation and organisation of labour, centralised hierarchy, and organisation of communities based on regional evidence. This study will integrate this often overlooked, but essential evidence to supplement and complement the larger archaeological narratives of the Iron Age in the Southern Levant. Thus, it will provide a perspective which crosses modern borders. Interpreting this resulting archaeological picture will contribute to wider scholarly understanding of non-taxonomic approaches to social organisation and complexity, while also breaking the IAI archaeological narratives away from outdated, often teleological narratives, providing a way forward through the stalemate.
