Urban Citizenship and Informality: New dynamics in the context of global urbanisation

This project will contribute to the understanding of the shifting dynamics of urban citizenshipthrough investigating the practices and struggles of those involved in the informal delivery ofcare work in Athens and Buenos Aires.Theoretically, it will grapple with work and time - as lived experience, as right and as resource -and it will explore the links between care arrangements, work/time redistribution and newcitizenship imaginaries. Methodologically, it will advance the practice of collaborative inquirythrough a novel combination of ethnographic, narrative productions and participatory researchmethods. Empirically, it will enrich the field with data from two countries ridden bysocio-economic crises, characterised by unemployment and precarity and yet also byexperimentation with social solidarity and care practices.The objective of the project is to produce a novel set of rich data that can empiricallysubstantiate the practices and struggles of care workers and theoretically point to new avenuesfor linking care, belonging and citizenship in urban contexts.
