This Collaborative Doctoral Partnership will consider the challenges of collecting and displaying "born digital" images within the contemporary museum context. The term "born digital" is used to distinguish images originally created in digital form using computational technology, to physical or analogue images that have later been digitised. Hybrid in nature and located at the convergence of previously separate disciplines, digital images often defy traditional classification and are not easily assigned to conventional museum categories of art, design and photography. Digital images from art and design fields as diverse as architecture, computer art, scientific visualization and videogame creation employ similar production practices and software tools yet draw from very different technical and aesthetic traditions. While at the level of code they may share similarities, at the level of culture and context they often diverge substantially. The relationship between digital images and the objects and programmes through which they are produced, stored and displayed is complex and introduces difficult and very material questions of collecting and exhibiting, as well as pressures on museum infrastructures.
