Freedom from Hegel: Heidegger's question and Schmitt's constitution

This project centres around the relation of anthropology to the concept of the state in Heidegger andSchmitt. Many interpretations of Schmitt and Heidegger insist on a radical rupture between theiranthropological presuppositions and their political commitments (Schurmann, Nancy, DeVille, Lievens).Another position insists that these are inseparable (Faye). The central question that this project will aimto answer is who, in this dispute, is right. In order to answer this, I propose the first English languageexamination of the common roots of Schmitt and Heidegger's concept of political life in their respectivecritique - but also absorption and transfiguration - of Hegel's Philosophy of Right. Their critique of Hegeldoubles as a contestation of idealist and liberal concepts of freedom with wide-ranging repercussions forpolitical, legal and philosophical thought. Hence, their notions of freedom are the pivotal element in myinvestigation.
