In the midst of the climate crisis at a time when society's relationship with the environment is more crucial than ever, this project will ascertain the potential of an environmental education program that targets and engages underrepresented (especially black and minority ethnic) young people, in influencing the participants' personal beliefs, behaviours and contributions to wider societal rhetoric and action The focus on underrepresented groups is crucial as scientific and political structures in general and environmental movements in particular lack diversity in the form of ethnicity, religion, class and gender among others. As such environmental concerns addressed by these groups, organisations and structures are those of a privileged subset of the population and are insufficient to address the current climate crisis. This research will explore to what extent an education program can change this, using London Wildlife Trust's Keeping it Wild program as a case study. The program works with underrepresented young people aged 11-25, to build skills in environmental management, communication and policy. This research will ascertain the role that an environmental access scheme can play in society in supporting the development of underrepresented groups whose perspectives are crucial, but historically overlooked in environmental management, policies and strategies. It will do this through observations, interviews and focus groups with program organisers and participants.
