EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This competing renewal describes a I"35 Short-Term Training Program in Dental and Craniofacial Research that will support 12 outstanding dental students for a comprehensive three-month summer training period. The Short-Term Training Program in Dental and Craniofaeial Research is part of the Baylor College of Dentistry Summer Research Program, which provides supplemental support for research expenses to "I"35 trainees and to a number of additional trainees. The long-term goals of the related programs are to expose outstanding dental students to biomedical and clinical research, and to encourage and facilitate their pursuit of a career as a clinician-scientist-educator. The specific goals of the Short-Term Training Program in Dental and Craniofacial Research are to: (a) identify outstanding dental students early in their educational experience who have an interest in dental-eraniofacial research; Co)match the students with faculty who have appropriate expertise, experience, and motivation to mentor students as they develop and carry out a specific biomedical and/or clinical research project; (c) broaden the experience and understanding of the student trainee with respect to modem biomedical research approaches and methods, social and ethical factors related to biomedical research, and career opportunities in biomedical research and education; (d) provide an outstanding academic environment, including both physical resources and personnel, for support of multidisciplinary research and training by dental students; and (e) encourage outstanding dental students to consider academic careers in dental education and research, and to facilitate development of interested students toward academic careers. Particular emphasis is placed on the recruitment and mentoring of underrepresented African American and Hispanic students in the Short-Term Training Program in Dental and Craniofaeial Research. Over 40 faculty from the Baylor College of Dentistry and Texas A&M University System Health Science Center are available as mentors for students in the Summer Research Program. Interested students and mentors submit an application for competitive review by the Research Committee.
