Cultural understanding of the kiss changed during the early twentieth century: it was theorised in sexology, exhibited at the cinema, and appeared in the public sphere to an unprecedented extent.Modernist writerers responded through literary representations of the kiss, miming its social and symbolic functions functions, but also - crucially - regarding it as a subspecies of touch. The burgeoning field of haptic studies reveals much about modernist literature, but kissing has been overlooked. This project explores the kiss as a form of touch, intervenes in critical discussions of 'haptic modernism' and places the kiss at the centre of attention for modernist scholarship.
