This project will integrate expertise in the Nitschke group (Chemistry) and Torrente groups (Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology) to develop This project will utilise the prior expertise of the Nitschke group to develop a new means of separation of useful building blocks from crude oil, bio-feedstocks, and natural product mixtures. Once encapsulated, the guests are isolated from their external surroundings and act as molecular cargoes during the stimulated phase transfer of the host nano-capsules. Very recently, we have developed the use of anions as stimuli to drive this phase transfer. These stimuli are effective but result in the accumulation of salt by-products in the system. The present project would build upon our recent progress by developing new 'clean' stimuli to trigger phase transfer of cages and by creating functional guest separation systems.
