Decentering Gender Dysphoria: Reconceptualizing and Rephrasing Transgender Experiences

In September 2020, the United Kingdom government announced it will continue to require a diagnosis of gender dysphoria to change one's legal sex (Parker 2020). Gender dysphoria is discomfort due to a conflict between one's assigned gender at birth and one's gender identity (American Psychological Association 2013). However, as a concept, it carries implications that being transgender is most importantly a medical issue, which restricts the agency of transgender people. In my PhD project, I will argue that these harmful implications reflect two types of social injustices, hermeneutical and discursive injustice, and demonstrate that these injustices are intrinsically linked.
