Negotiating representation: The ambivalence of Palestinian politics in Israeli media and cultural industries

This research will investigate how Palestinian media and cultural practitioners influence political discourse vis-à-vis the national struggle for liberation, by focusing on Israeli broadcast television, cinema and theatre. Some view Palestinian involvement with settler-state media and cultural initiatives as necessary for disrupting racist representations. Others think it leads to absorption into hegemonic standards, and the reproduction of colonised subjects as exotict at best. The project will explore this complexity through interviews with, and observations of Palestinian practitioners in the Israeli sphere; and analysis of symbolic goods, to read how these interactions manifest in the reproduction and contestation of racialisation. By painting a nuanced, encompassing picture of the way symbolic meaning is negotiated, disseminated and consumed, the project aims to fill a gap at the intersection of Palestinian studies, cultural and media studies, critical race theory, anticolonial studies, and indigenous studies. Mapping the possibilities for Palestinian citizens of Israel to articulate their histories and realities will substantiate part of an ongoing conversation on the involvement of Indigenous socities with settler-colonial states.
