Narratives of the Subaltern in Contemporary Palestinian Writings

In this thesis, I aim to examine contemporary Palestinian writings by looking at key themes, new genres and the innovative aesthetics of five contemporary writers who represent a new generation of the Palestinian literary movement: Susan Abulhawa, Suad Amiry, Mourid Barghouthi, Ghada Karmi and Raja Shehadeh. By locating the thematic, linguistic and aesthetic shift in Palestinian literature from a romantic, radical and revolutionary literature of resistance to a mature, self-critical political literature of resilience, I aim to address the progressive political insights and modern poetics of contemporary writers whose secular humanist approach towards the conflict sheds light on innovative political solutions based on justice and coexistence.
