Despite evidence of its effect on well-being, play provisions in adulthood are scarce. Open-ended play, a type of play with no pre-determined goals, positively impacts well-being, creativity and social development in childhood. Interactive installations are well-suited to support open-ended play in adulthood thanks to their accessibility, physicality, social interaction and site-specificity compared to traditional in-home gaming. Casual creators are a genre of playful technology which use generative processes to aid open-ended creative play. They are commonly used in digital media but haven't yet been explored in interactive installation design. Additionally, the use of generative sound and graphics systems have the potential to support exploration and flow experiences in interactive installation settings. The proposed study will identify design patterns to support open- ended play for wellbeing in adulthood through interactive installations using generativesystems.
