This exciting PhD project combines the application of novel imaging techniques with the characterisation of surface chemistry of corrosion processes relevant to product store infrastructure and exposure environments. Key aim here is to first optimise existing surface analysis routines, to provide a better understanding of the effect of environmental parameters on the corrosion behaviour, followed by the development of a mechanistic understanding to assess how surface chemistry can affect material life-time. The same methodology will be be applied to test a numbere of proposed corrosion mitigation strategies, as well as exploring the electrochemical response of materials subjected to atmospheric wet-dry cycles. Surface imaging and characterisaiton of a wide range of modalities will result in the creation of a set of multiscale analysis techniques to detect and quantify corrosion from the microscopic to macroscopic scale. The latter aims to develop in-store corrosion monitoring capability. The acquisition of the data, combined with the proposed analysis routines, will be a first-of- their-kind suite of tools to detect - with confidence - the earliest interval at which corrosion products can be robustly detected in all imaging technologies. The developed mtethodology will be applied to both aluminium alloy 6063 and type 316L stainless steel.
