Tape springs are shell structures that have good properties for deployable structures; they can be rolled up, and can form elastic hinges. As such they are widely used in aerospace applications where the premium on space means deployable structures are required but reliability and low weight are paramount - for example solar panels on satellites. There has so far been relatively little application of them to earth based civil engineering. Additionally, straight tape springs have been studied extensively but there is a wider range of possible geometries. This PhD will investigate novel geometries of tape springs, including "tape rings", which are tape springs with toroidal curvature, through experimentation, computational simulation, and application of shell structural mechanics. The PhD will also consider civil based applications for tape springs, and design a reconfigurable structure in collaboration with Structuremode.
