The impact of immigration on the development of citizenship in seventeenth-century England

This thesis will explore the relationship between immigration and developing notions of citizenship in seventeenth-century England through the prism of law. While historians have recognised the 17th-century as critical in the development of concepts of citizenship, scholars have largely neglected the lively debates around immigration, particularly the legislation, litigation and legally informed debates that contributed to defining and policing the alien and citizen. Recovering the history of 17th-century migration to England in the context of citizenship is important to complicate oversimplified narratives of a 'proud history of welcome'.
