Rudeness and incivility among surgical team members has long been a concern, with some evidence indicating that it impacts patient safety, complications, and outcomes. We investigated a novel and simple intervention. Being observed is known to promote more positive and ethical behaviours. The effect is so strong that even signs with a drawing of an eye impact people's behaviour, reduce crime, increase honesty, and promote prosocial behaviours. Signs were placed on operating theatre walls that depict an eye with slogans such as 'operate with respect.' The aim was to determine if this small intervention of 'Eyes' on the wall decreases incivility in surgical teams.
