Sociocultural poetic translations of the Latin Classics in the work of Edoardo Sanguineti (1930 - 2010)

The poetic translations of the Latin Classics greatly contributed to twentieth-century Italian culture. Focusing on the works by the Italian poet Edoardo Sanguineti (1930-2010), I shall study how translations negotiate ideas of identity and alterity with the Classics. Using a methodology combining Translation and Reception Studies, Linguistic and Sociolinguistic, I shall analyse three main topics that remain largely understudied: the linguistic evolution from the original to the target text; the sociocultural position determined by foreignization and domestication strategies; the author-reader relationship. I aim to shed new light on how translations of Latin works shaped the twentieth-century debate on Italian identity.
