英文摘要
ims and Research QuestionsThis project investigates the impact of political interference and control on the contemporary music industry inHungary under the Fidesz administration. The industry and the government have intertwined because, as MichaelIgnatieff puts it, 'the regime is violently anti-Communist in its rhetoric, but in its practice it reproduces features of theancien régime.'1 Because the intertwining of public and private enterprise and media has been an indicator of theparty's ever-gaining autocratic position itself, this dissertation engages with the following questions:- In what ways has the Orbán regime impacted on the production, performance and reception of popularmusic?- To what extent has the music industry's accommodation with Orbán's regime compromised their professionalactivity in unforeseen and undesirable ways?- How has music been used to manipulate public opinion?- What does the situation in Hungary tell us more broadly about the use and abuse of music in an era ofpopulist and post-truth politics? This academic investigation has the potential to start a wider conversation that is much needed, for it is evident thatin our current era of mis- and disinformation and political uncertainty, academic reviews on contemporary historyare becoming more crucial than ever.
