'This image has to speak volumes': Kate Millett's Visual Art.

Kate Millet (1934-2017) is widely acknowledged as a key foundational figure of US-based second-wave feminism. Upon publication in 1970 of her book of feminist literary criticism, Sexual Politics, Millett became an internationally-known public intellectual. Despite her literary fame, Millett considered herself an artist first-and-foremost, and felt it was imperative that her work, which mainly focused on depictions of lesbian sexuality and relationships c.1970 onwards, 'speak volumes'. The ongoing scholarly silence around practices like Millett's reveals what Catherine Lord has referred to as the 'ontological impossibility' of the figure of the lesbian in the history of art. My research project aims to find ways of redressing the marginalization of lesbian histories within the discipline using experimental methodologies to allow Millett's work-and those by artists like her-to speak.
