Giving Voice to Experience: A Users' History of Augmentative and Alternative Communication

This dissertation will investigate individual and family experiences of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and devise a new oral history methodology adapted to the specificity of AAC voices. It will give attention to the unstudied history surrounding voice, speech, identity, technology, and experience.20 oral history interviews will be undertaken with AAC users, the first of their kind, and a further 10 from family members, friends, or carers, integrating approaches from language sciences to enrich my analysis. Video recordings of interviews will provide data on emotional states, which are lacking in the AAC vocal domain.
