The proposed project identifies a significant gap in existing knowledge: the inclination of bystanders to become involved in the policing of street harassment experienced by women. As such, it addresses a current priority for applied criminology and policy-making about women's safety in Wales with the potential to make an important contribution to wider arguments about the 'responsibilisation' of private citizens for policing their own and others behaviour, especially where protection from public authorities is severely limited or impractical. In the interview, Miss Barrow elaborated on her proposed methods for investigating bystander intervention, including the use of ethnographic methods to observe the enacted environments of street harassment, especially those found in the hospitality sector of the night-time economy and to recruit focus group discussants through these methods and through engagement with online social networks, something she is piloting through her masters dissertation, which has received ethical clearance.
