英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goal of the UPRMSC RCMI Program for the previous five years was to continue the development of research by focusing on the development of a strong infrastructure for conducting research related to health disparities in the Puerto Rican population. Research approaches to address this goal ranged from the molecular to clinical level. The Specific Aims were to: 1) develop infrastructure and provide support services to facilitate the conduct of research related to health disparities; 2) target specific areas of research related to health disparities and provide a focal point for these research activities on Campus; and 3) promote the professional development of the research faculty and technical personnel working in this area. To achieve these objectives, it is proposed to establish the Health Disparities Research Program. The Program was three components: 1) a Division of Research Resources, which will include all activities that provide research support services in the areas of molecular genetics, information architecture, and image analysis; 2) a Division of Research Development will support research activities addressing health disparities in the population such as AIDS, women's health (breast cancer, osteoporosis), emerging infectious diseases, and blood disorders; 3) and the Division of Advancement in Research will provide opportunities for strengthening research skills, obtaining specialized services on biostatistics, epidemiology and scientific editing, rewarding role models, protecting and commercializing ideas, and accessing research-related databases. The fourth cycle of the RCMI Program was critical to the preservation of the progress which has been made us far, and in permitting still greater levels of achievements by focusing on the health disparities that affect the Puerto Rican population.
