This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The major goal of the Neuroscience Research Program (NRP) of the RCMI Program is to develop a research infrastructure in neuroscience at Florida A&M University (FAMU). This Program will have a major impact in increasing the number of minority neuroscientists in the nation. FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is a leading institution in training African Americans with PhD degrees in pharmaceutical sciences with emphasis in neuroscience. The purpose of this application is to continue the development of neuroscience research by adding onto the human infrastructure and research resources that already exist. During the last grant period the RCMI neuroscience support allowed for the hiring of new faculty members and for junior faculty in the program to establish new laboratories. Specific aims and Methods: To support the research pilot projects of two FAMU investigators. The projects are expected to generate data that will be published and will help to establish the investigators and allow them to seek and obtain independent research funds. The project will support the development of an adequate physical facility which includes equipping a dark room facility and purchasing an ultracold refrigerator. To offer in-house support to: start neuroscience research projects; and provide training and academic interaction in the form of seminars and workshops. This project will enhance the neuroscience program by recruiting doctoral level neuroscientists. They will contribute to the quality and diversity of the research program, including obtaining NIH R01-type grant support. One will be recruited during the first year and another during the second year of the grant. The University will permanently hire those individuals after the expiration of the grant.
